CHOOSING THE RIGHT PUPPY FOR THE RIGHT HOME!

Getting a dog or puppy on impulse is rarely a good idea. Remember that dogs, like cars, were designed for a particular function. You need to decide what you want, a Corvette or a Suburban, a Fox Terrier or a Newfoundland.

When the various breeds were originally developed, there was a greater emphasis on the ability to do a job, such as herding, guarding, hunting, drafting, etc., than appearance. If a particular breed interests you, find out first what the dog was bred to do. There are so many different breeds to choose from and if there is a secret to getting that “perfect puppy”, it lies in doing your homework.

DECIDING WHAT KIND OF DOG TO GET

The well-trained dog begins with some idea of what role the dog is expected to play in your life and then selecting a dog that is suitable for the job. Following are some of the reasons for selecting a dog:

• Companionship;
• Playmate for the kids;
• Protection;
• A special activity, such as hunting, herding, breeding, showing in conformation, or competing in performance events;
• Status symbol (not wise); or
• A combination of the above.

Some dogs are able to fill all of these expectations, while others have more limited talents.

Getting a dog for a status symbol usually means one of the guarding or rarer breeds, and often these represent some special challenges. If you want a rare breed, first find out why it is such a rare breed and if there are any potential drawbacks.

Conversely, one of the most popular dogs and number 1 in American Kennel Club registrations is the Labrador Retriever. The reason is simple - it is a good multipurpose dog that can serve as a companion and playmate for the kids, is naturally protective, generally enjoys good health, makes a good guide dog, and with little time and effort can be transformed into a well trained dog.

You also need to take into account your own life style and circumstances. For most of us this means a dog that can satisfy our need for companionship, is easily trained and doesn’t require a lot of upkeep.

Windara Kennel, established in 1998, is a small kennel in southeast Saskatchewan, Canada. We are a member of the CANADIAN KENNEL CLUB. Our selective breeding program provides quality, solid, and gentle natured puppies. We are dedicated to improving the Labrador breed. All of our puppies are well socialized and share time in and out of the house as a part of our family.

Breeding Labrador Retrievers began with the desire to some day have puppies sound enough to donate for ASSISTANCE DOGS. We have limited the number of quality dogs in our program -- an amount that allows us to devote our time, love, and attention to each and every one of them. The health and happiness of our dogs is priority and they spend their days where they are most comfortable. Our dogs love to roam our farm and go swimming in sloughs and dugouts, jump in the truck to check crops, or go for a joy ride on the quad.

We are eager to specifically select a puppy for your needs, whether it be a family pet or a hunting companion, a therapy dog, a jogging companion or agility/flyball/conformation events. Please note that each potential puppy is screened and approved before a reservation is made. This ensures that our puppies are only going to homes that have carefully thought out and planned for the addition of a quality, well-bred puppy to their family. Although we do our very best to seek out only the most loving and stable homes, we feel a sense of responsibility to each Windara dog throughout its entire life and will always be available to assist them in any way we can - even if it means welcoming the dog back into our own family or finding another suitable home for it in the event that its family can no longer care for it.

This was Kaelyn and Mori's playhouse when they were little girls. Now it gets used as overflow and can house two litters of puppies.

All of our breeding stock have their hips and elbows x-rayed and eyes are certified prior to breeding.
Windara puppies are sold with a written 2 YEAR HEALTH GUARANTEE of genetic soundness.(OFA'S HIPS, EYES, ELBOWS and DNA tests recommended for Labrador Retrievers)

Buyer's Protection General Health Guarantee:

Puppy is deemed by WINDARA KENNEL and VETERINARIAN to be in sound health. Within three days of taking possession of puppy identified by tatoo KCS______ and Microchip #_________________, you are encouraged to visit veterinarian of your choice for a second opinion. If puppy is found affected by any disease process or health condition, puppy can be returned to Windara and purchase price refunded. Windara is not responsible for vet expence and transportation to return puppy.

Buyer's Protection Two-Year Guarantee

If hereditary deformities present by two years of age ________________________ puppy will be replaced upon return of said puppy to Windara Kennel. Breeder is not responsible for joint x/rays evaluated by the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, eye examination as certified by the Western College of Veterinary Opthamolgy, laboratory testing, veterinarian procedures and expences incurred to diagnose hereditary defects. All x-rays, reports and veterinarian documents must be made available to Windara Kennel upon request.
